Hacked!

CEO, Dr. Michelle Perro discusses infant formula and heavy metal toxicity.

On January 5, 2024, our website, gmoscience.org went down.  In the past 10 years since its inception, this has never occurred.  What has changed?

A raw nerve was touched.  Perhaps, it is the 1.4-billion-dollar infant formula industry that doesn’t want its products exposed for heavy metals?  Speculation, of course.   This is the first foray by our nonprofit into the research arena.  Possibly, we may have stepped on some toes.

A Bit of History

The EPA passed the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) in 1976, amended by President Obama in 2016.  The EPA has the authority to restrict certain exposures to the public, excluding foods.  However, heavy metals were not excluded.

The EPA will be required to act via their own compliance ordinance (TSCA) if indeed we expose heavy metals in the only source of sustenance for many infants; formula.

In 2017, I became familiar with the book, Unsafe at Any Meal by Dr. Renee Joy Dufault, whistleblower, and previous US Public Health Service Officer working for the FDA. (1)

Serendipitously, Dr. Dufault found undisclosed mercury residues in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) samples collected by FDA law enforcement officers.  The FDA had commanded her to stop her investigation.  After her voluntary retirement from the FDA, she continued her work exposing this largely unknown national crime.

The good news is that the amount of per capita consumption of HFCS has gone down over the past 19 years.  However, Americans are still consuming approximately 40 pounds of HFCS per year (2)

Despite the reduction in intake by Americans, any amount of heavy metals is extremely concerning for babies consuming infant formula, where the main ingredient for some of the formulations is HFCS. Manufacturers are not required to report heavy metals to regulators. However, in October 2023, Governor Newsom of California signed AB-899; a bill that requires manufacturers to test for the presence of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury in finished baby food products. While this is excellent news, ‘baby food’ does not include infant formula. (3)
This is unacceptable.

The EU bans HFCS in infant formula. Many moms are turning to European-made formulas. However, imported infant formulas are more expensive and less accessible than the typical brands found across American markets.

The literature is limited in infant formula/heavy metal research. One lone study studied 91 samples of infant formula from the Denver, CO area for lead and cadmium. 22% exceeded guidelines for those heavy metals. Curiously, mercury and arsenic were not included. (4)

The truth is there are no safe levels of toxic metal exposures in children, especially in infants.

The FDA published ‘Closer to Zero,’ assessing nutrients and inorganic metals from the period of 2019-2020. (5)  They surveyed hundreds of foods, including conventional and organic baby food, as well as 6 infant formulas.  Two of the infant formulas did not test positive for any heavy metals.  Four of the infant formulas were positive for arsenic and cadmium, but negative for lead and mercury. (6)

The formula companies and types were not identified, nor were the ingredients listed.  We posit that those formulas containing HFCS specifically should be tested, particularly regarding mercury.  It should be noted that of the 4 of the 6 samples evaluated demonstrated two neurotoxic metals.  What actionable items have been instituted since the publication of the study?

GMOScience.org has garnered enough funds to independently study whether 10 commonly utilized HFCS-containing infant formulas are contaminated with heavy metals, (mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium). We need your financial support to analyze more baby formulas to increase the power of our study.

Our site is now up and running.

The Infant Formula Toxic Metal Study Getting Press

Moms Across America, The New MDS, and GMOScience, banded together and did the work of regulatory agencies. We’ve confirmed what officials already knew; infant formula, the only food for many babies, is contaminated and it has been given a pass.

However, this David and Goliath tale has not gone unnoticed and has been picked up by global news agencies, including Dr. Mercola, The Exposé, Children’s Health Defense, and The Townsend Letter. Additionally, the FDA has made recommendations to Congress regarding the Safe Baby Food Act based on our joint meeting regarding our findings in May 2024.

Millions of parents are now becoming aware of the toxic metal contamination in the formulas that they are feeding their most vulnerable and immediate action must occur to rectify this situation.

Censorship and propaganda are intrinsically linked as tools of information control used to shape public perception and influence societal attitudes. Censorship involves the suppression or restriction of access to information, often to prevent dissenting or opposing viewpoints from reaching the public. This creates a controlled information environment where only select narratives are allowed to prevail. Propaganda, on the other hand, actively disseminates specific information, often biased or misleading, to promote a particular political agenda or ideology.

Article 3 in the Got Real Milk Series
The presence of toxic metals in infant formula is a critical issue that demands immediate action.
Public education is crucial to raise awareness among parents and caregivers about the potential risks and safety measures. Regulatory action by Congress is necessary to empower the FDA and other agencies to enforce stringent safety standards. Additionally, formula companies must take corrective actions to ensure their products are safe.
To address this issue, we are initiating a petition to urge Congress to remove any barriers preventing the FDA from enforcing these necessary regulations. In the meantime, parents can consider various supplements that may help offset the toxicity, although this should be done in consultation with healthcare professionals.
By working together—regulators, companies, and consumers—we can ensure that infant formula products are safe and healthy for our most vulnerable population, our babies.
